What’s the difference between insurance agents and insurance consultants?

I get this question all the time. I am a Certified Insurance Consultant. I am not an insurance agent. So let me clarify.
Insurance agents sell insurance. They understand the features in insurance plans enough to answer common sales and service questions. They aren't necessarily experts on healthcare benefits. They aren’t obliged to sell all plans and products on the market, just the ones they want to. They get paid by the insurance company, and are only paid when they make a sale. As with anyone in a sales role, some are great advocates, and some only care about their commission.
Insurance consultants work for and are paid by their clients. Our only priority is to understand what you need and find the most effective solution to help you get there. That may be helping you buy an insurance product or service, or it may not. We look at the big picture to put together the pieces you need. We are your partner.
You may need both an insurance agent or an insurance consultant at various points in your life. Understand which you need at the time to get the best result.
