Five Healthcare Numbers that Scare me

Are you at risk?

I read many digests and newsletters about insurance and the healthcare system. Regulations and business models change regularly. It’s my business (and my interest) so I try to stay on top of things.

Every year different researchers analyze healthcare and Medicare spending. They confirm what we all intrinsically know: healthcare is expensive, and our health isn't as good as we hope.

Let's dive in deeper. Here are five numbers that scare me.

43% of adults don’t take their medications as prescribed because of the cost (2025)*. One in five adults either skip their medicine, split pills or use potentially less effective over the counter solutions. Research proves that management of chronic conditions improves your health, lengthens your life and costs less.

Among Medicare beneficiaries 65% have high blood pressure, 26% have diabetes, and 19% have depression (2023)+. These conditions are all modifiable risk factors for dementia. Treat these conditions to keep your brain healthy!

The Median annual cost of a nursing home is over $100,000 (2025)^. That’s the weighted average; some cost more. 80% of seniors will need nursing home care, 40% for over a year. Long term care insurance can be expensive, but there are options. Start early in your planning to manage costs. Do you have a plan?

41% of people reported debt from medical or dental care (2022)*. It may be on a credit card, owed to friends and family, or in collections. But think about it: more than one in five people go into debt to get care.

100,000 people enroll in Medicare beneficiaries every month (2026)+.  Overall 69 million people rely on Medicare to manage their health. If you’ve watched the news, you’ve heard again and again that some in Congress want to cut funding. We’ve paid in for years through payroll deductions; it’s the FICA line on your pay stub. Protect the coverage you've paid for!
